January 20, 1999
Dear Physics/Physical Science Teacher:
The Society of Physics Students and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stephen F. Austin State University will be holding a Physics Olympics for area high school students on the SFASU campus on February 27, 1999. We shall begin at 8:30 AM and end before 3 PM. Lunch will be provided.
We invite you to bring one to five teams with each team consisting of no more than five and no less than three members. Due to building renovations we will have three main events: the Egg Drop, the Water Rocket, and Eggstraction. Trophies, ribbons, and certificates of participation will be awarded. There will also be a full-length planetarium show this year.
Please do not let your students miss this opportunity. Physics Olympics are conducted throughout the country, and they have been exciting students about science for several years. Be a teacher that makes a difference in your students’ attitudes toward science. Join us with other area high schools for a day of fun doing olympic activities at SFASU.
Enclosed is a list of the events for this year and a registration form. Full descriptions of each event are included. You can also view these at the following web site:

We look forward to seeing you and your students at our Physics Olympics.
Sincerely yours,
Dan Bruton
Assistant Professor

Additional Information
Each school must have at least one sponsor, however, a school with multiple teams is encouraged to have a sponsor for each team.
Each student must complete a liability waiver form; the forms are due on the morning of the olympics (February 27, 1999) and must be presented prior to participation in any events.
Registration will begin at 8:30 AM and end promptly at 9:00 AM (please arrive on time).
Please contact me if you have any questions as to semantics of event rules, etc. My address is on the letterhead. My fax is (936) 468-4448.
Once judging of an event begins, the team sponsor may not converse with the judge on any matter, may not touch the project being judged, and may not assist the team in any manner, including verbal hints.
Please remember that the spirit of competition is important but the camaraderie and the fun with physics are the goals of this olympic competition.
Good Luck to Everyone
