Student Research at the

SFASU Observatory

Located in the Piney Woods of East Texas, the Observatory for Stephen F. Austin State University is the home of the largest astronomical teaching facility in the state of Texas. The domes at left house fully automated 18- and 41-inch telescopes for use in a wide variety of research.

The CCD Photometer of the 18-inch telescope has been the workhorse of student research activities lately. The system consists of a Photometrics, Ltd. Star-1 camera with a CompuScope FW-1 filter wheel. The telescope and camera system are controlled by locally developed software. Below are documented some of the student research projects of the last six months.
