"I am going to calculate..."
  • I am going to calculate what the imaginary student, Suzie Que, must do to make the grade she seeks in this course.

  • To see what you must do, just follow the calculation, but use your grades in place of Suzie Que’s.
2
"First I am going to..."
  • First I am going to determine how many bonus points Suzie will get.
  • Remember there are more than enough attendance checks to get a maximum of 40 bonus points.
  • I am going to assume that Suzie’s attendance gets her 35 points.
3
"Next I am going to..."
  • Next I am going to determine how many pop quiz points Suzie will get.
  • Remember there are more than enough pop quizzes to get a maximum of 40 pop quiz points.
  • I am going to assume that Suzie’s pop quizzes gets her 30 points.

"Next I need to estimate..."
  • Next I need to estimate what Suzie’s lab experiment average will be at the end of the semester.
  • I estimate that to be 97.
  • So far she has 35+30+97=162 points.
5
"Next I add in the..."
  • Next I add in the points from her first lab exam.
  • Suzie got 9 out of 15 questions correct. The number of points she gets is
6
"Now I must add in..."
  • Now I must add in her lecture exams so far.
  • For example, let’s assume Suzie got 25 correct on the first test and 29 correct on the second.
  • Let’s see how many points that gets her.
7
"Suzie only got 23 questions..."
  • Suzie only got 23 questions correct on test 3.  This gives her
8
"Let’s assume that she wants..."
  • Let’s assume that she wants to make a “B.”   That requires 640 (actually 630) total points.
  • 630-463=167
  • 167 points on the remaining exam is required to make a “B.”
9
"There is still 190 points..."
  • There is still 190 points available on the remaining exam.
