NASA Rover Success!

On January 3rd, the Mars Spirit lander successfully entered the Martian atmosphere protected by heat shields, descended with the aid of a parachute, and then bounced a kilometer along the surface of Mars on its airbags. "What a night," said Steve Squyres, Principal Investigator for Spirit. "Spirit has shown us her new home, Gusev Crater." This crater is thought to be a dried-up bed of a crater-lake. The images are starting to make it back to Earth.

SPS at SFA Wins National Award

The Stephen F. Austin State University Chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) has won another Outstanding Chapter Award, this time for the year 02-03. Congratulations to Ali and his SPS students. On behalf of the department, congratulations, and thanks for putting SFA in the regional and national spotlights.

SFA Robot Rovers

On December 11, 2003 the Engineering 215 and Physics 262 class demonstrated their robot rovers Each year students in the electronics course build small vehicles as part of a class project. The goal of this team project is to learn how to make the best use of a battery and DC motor in to order cover 50 feet. In 2003 the SFA Robot Rovers were required to autonomously detect and avoid obstacles. In 2004, the SFA Robot Rovers will be required to go to Mars and send back images.
