Engineering 112 – Foundations of Engineering II

Review for Exam IV

Chapter 21 - Accounting for Angular Momentum

·        Definitions

o       Linear to Angular Conversions:  s = r q,  v = r w,   a = r a

o       w = angular velocity (measured in radians per second) = 2pf

o       P = period (measured in seconds) = 1/f

o       f = frequency (measured in rpm or Hertz) = 1/P

o       r = radius of the circular path

o       Centripetal Acceleration = a = v2/r  = r w2

o       T = Torque = r F sin q

o       L = Angular Momentum

§         L = r m v sin q                    (for a particle)

§         L = Iw                                (for a solid object)

§         I = moment of inertia           (See table 21.2)

o       UAE for Angular Momentum

§         Li + T t = Lf

·        What is meant by centripetal force and centrifugal force?  What’s the difference?

·        Review tables 21.1 and 21.2.

·        Expect to see exam questions similar to these:

o       Example problems within the chapter:  21.1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10(Use UAE)

o       Problems at the end of the chapter: 21.1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11
